Similarly, holding a magic wand in your character’s magic slot will boost those rolls. For example, if you acquire and slot a golden compass into your scouting item block, you can get a plus two bonus added to all scouting rolls. Most rolls are heavily modified by your character’s skills, which you can grow in the game in response to events or which are also modified based on the types of equipment you carry, with one slot available for each major skill. For the Lone Wolf books, if you didn’t have any dice handy, there was a chart of numbers in the back of the book that you could randomly pick from when prompted.įor the Fabled Lands video game, all of the dice rolls are of course handled by the computer. Gamebooks like that generally present a story to readers with options like a Choose Your Own Adventure title, only instead of just making story choices you sometimes need to roll dice or refer to your character sheet before proceeding. Although I have never read/played the Fabled Lands gamebooks, I was really into the Lone Wolf series growing up, so I understand the concept. Their books are extremely popular, and the content of several of them have come together to form the basis of the video game. The Fabled Lands video game is based on the paperback gamebook series of the same name written by Dave Morris and Jamie Thomson. The game is currently available on Steam for under $20, and the amount of content that you get for that discount price is quite a value, assuming you like the kind of gameplay that Fabled Lands offers. Whether or not you want to become a hero of the realm, a wealthy merchant, an agent of chaos or just a wandering adventurer looking for their next thrill is totally up to you. You can literally wander off in any direction and get involved in just about anything you want. As a bonus, Fabled Lands does not try and hold a player’s hand. I know it was quite a shock for me at first, although once I learned the mechanics of how the game worked, I found it to be a really interesting way to present a deeply detailed world for players to explore. With the town of Plymouth straddling both the southwest boarder of McDonough and the south-eastern edge of Hancock County.Fabled Lands is a role-playing game that is likely a bit different from most others you have probably played before. "The cities, towns and villages of McDonough County are Adair, Bardolph, Blandinsville, Bushnell, Colchester, Colmar, Fandon, Good Hope, Industry, Macomb, New Philadelphia, Prairie City, Sciota, Tennessee and Walnut Grove. All the towns that now exist are either on an existing railroad or on a proposed railroad. Almost all of the early settlements disappeared after the railroads came in during the mid-1850s. "Over the next twenty years, prior to the coming of the railroads, 24 settlements appeared. When the county was granted self-governing status in late 1830, some of the first items that the commissioners went to work on were the laying out of roads to places of importance. ![]() "In 1826 when McDonough County was founded, pioneers began settling in three distinct groupings that became three distinct settlements. ![]() The county’s first trail was to guide southern Illinois pioneers from Beard’s ferry across the Illinois River to Rock Island and into the mining region of northwestern Illinois. The heavily wooded and hilly southwest quarter of the county contained few land grants to the veterans. "Both the surveys and the pattern of lands granted show that the county was not homogenous. Most of the county was awarded to veterans of the war as land grants for their services. The first documented “Americans” in McDonough County were soldiers from the War of 1812, followed shortly thereafter by teams of surveyors in 1816 that crisscrossed the county in a grid of half mile squares. Macomb is also where the concept for the fabled Republic of Forgottonia was created and where both its fictitious capitol of Fandon and its Governor, Neal Gamm were decided upon. The county seat, Macomb, is situated at the very middle of McDonough, and the courthouse itself sits almost precisely at the county’s center. "The county has the unusual distinction of forming a perfect square by Mercator map projection. "Established in 1830, McDonough County is named for Commodore Thomas McDonough who led a successful battle against the British on Lake Champlain in the War of 1812. Location of county: Mid-central, eastern edge of state crossroads of: US-136, IL-9, IL-110 and US-67, IL-41, IL-61Ĭounty Named for Thomas McDonough, a Commodore of the United States Navy Location of courthouse: 1 Courthouse Square, Macomb ![]()

Despite the fact that both C and D sound happy, they aren’t exactly the most pleasant sounds. Depending on the chord in question, these states have varying intensity levels. It always sounds ridiculous and self-defeating. Look for punk bands that attempted to sound angry with a major chord progression. The mathematical relationships between them are formed by the combination of intervals. Major chords have happy or light sounding words, minor chords tend toward darkness/somber/sad, augmented 2nd or 4th chords are mysterious and mildly tense, diminished chords are evil/dissonant/confused, and so on. As a general rule, I would recommend focusing on a simple progression, possibly a combination of major and minor, as well as a melody that achieves the desired feeling. This may upset some people, but if you’re after discrete graphics then the XPS range is where you want to be and a large majority of people simply don’t need or want a laptop to play games on, especially when the integrated graphics generates some tangible improvements in battery life. Graphics, as with the whole range, is supplied by Intel’s GMA X3100 integrated solution and there are no other options available. This is supported by 2GBs of 667MHz DDR2 RAM, with a 160GB 7200rpm SATA HDD. Our sample system sits somewhere towards the upper end of the range, with an Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 that runs at 2.0GHz with 2MB L2 Cache and a 800MHz Front Side Bus. But, though the 1525 is noticeably cheaper, it doesn’t look or feel like a cheap laptop, so you needn’t feel embarrassed to own one – quite the contrary, in fact.Īs ever, there’s a fairly extensive selection of options on hand, with CPU offerings going all the way back to a 1.6GHz T2330 to the more recent T8100 and T8300 45nm Penryn CPUs – both of which can be read about in our Inside Mobile Penryn feature. You don’t get a slot-loading optical drive and the battery packs lack the useful little battery meter that the premium line has. Dell has also borrowed a trick from HP by sinking the touch pad into the chassis, and the keyboard is truly excellent, with light, crisp and responsive keys that make typing a breeze.Īgain, the keyboard is identical to that found on the XPS range, but not everything is the same. Inside things look good too with nice textured sliver plastic and handy touch-sensitive media controls ripped more or less directly from the XPS range. Its new slimmer and lighter frame is a massive step forward, while the selection of lid designs is exhaustive. Overall, initial impressions of the Inspiron 1525 are almost entirely positive. Our sample has the Street design (above, on the left) probably the worst of the lot though a couple of them look pretty decent. Standard options are for either a matte black or glossy white finish, while you can also choose from pink, brown, red, green or yellow Microsatin finishes or a new selection of designs called Commotion, Street, Chill and Blossom. There’s also an even larger array of lid finishes to choose from. This is a very decent weight for a notebook of this size, while the quoted thickness of 25mm to 37mm, front to back, means it feels slim and elegant. Dell quotes a starting weight of 2.7kg with a four-cell battery, but we found it weighed exactly that with a standard six-cell battery. Indeed, the new XPS notebooks were very much the response to such criticisms and Dell seems to have taken the lessons learnt there and applied them to its replacement, the Inspiron 1525.Īn entry level 15.4in notebook, the 1525 shares a very similar wedge shaped base to that of the XPS M1530. Though it introduced some new elements, such as a range of colourful finishes, it was bulky and uninspiring in a time when notebooks were becoming slimmer and easier to handle. But let it not be said that Dell has had things all its own way, because there have been a few turkeys lodged in there too – the XPS M1730 springs to mind.Īnother underwhelming effort was the previous Inspiron laptop, the Inspiron 1520. ![]() Its new range of XPS notebooks, the M1330 and M1530 were both great machines, while its desktop offerings, like the XPS 420, haven’t been half bad either.
